Duty Cycle Is the Whole Story Out Here

A stove in a Snowflake house is frequently the primary heat, lit in October and not really allowed to go out until April. That is a duty cycle several times higher than the same model as a weekend cabin appliance, and everything consumable wears proportionally.

Door gaskets flatten in a couple of seasons rather than five. Baffle plates, which sit directly in the hottest part of the gas path, warp and eventually burn through. Firebrick that would last a decade of occasional fires cracks and crumbles in half that. None of this is a defect - it is the appliance doing its job - and every one of those parts is cheap while the stove is cold in June.

The Oversized-Stove Trap

The most common underlying fault out here is a stove too big for the room. Somebody bought for the worst week of the year, and for the other twenty weeks the owner damps it right down so the house is liveable.

A damped stove smoulders. Smouldering is incomplete combustion - unburned volatiles going up a cool flue - which means glaze on the flue wall and brown glass by Wednesday. It also means the appliance produces less usable heat per cord, so it costs more to run while performing worse. The fix is smaller hotter fires, and where the appliance is genuinely far oversized, a smaller one.

Wet Wood, Specifically Juniper

Juniper is available and splits easily, which is exactly why it tends to go into the stove greener than it should. Resinous wood burned below temperature deposits heavily and fast. The practical marker is the glass: if the door glazes brown within a week of cleaning, either the wood is wetter than you think or the stove is running too cool, and both show up in the flue long before they show up as a problem.
