Pellet country - blowers, augers and the error code on the coldest night.
Show Low is pellet country. Fuel is available in town, it stores clean and dry in a garage instead of a woodpile, and for a house occupied all winter a pellet stove is genuinely less work than wood. The consequence is that a large share of our service calls here are machine work rather than brush work.
A pellet stove has an auger, a combustion blower, a convection blower, an igniter and a control board. It is closer to a small furnace than to a wood stove, and it has a real annual service interval that the manual states and almost nobody follows.
The exhaust blower first. Fly ash cakes onto the impeller until it can no longer move enough air to sustain combustion, and the board correctly shuts the appliance down. Second, heat exchanger passages packed enough that the stove runs but delivers a fraction of its rated output - the owner experiences this as "it doesn't heat like it used to" rather than as a fault. Third, gaskets on the door and hopper, which on a negative-pressure firebox let air in where it should not be. Fourth, auger wear or a jam from a bag heavy in fines.
Note what is not on that list: the control board. Boards get blamed and replaced constantly, and they are the most expensive part in the appliance. In the overwhelming majority of shutdowns the board is doing exactly its job - detecting that combustion cannot be maintained - and the actual fault is a blocked exhaust path.
At 6,400 feet there is less oxygen per unit volume than the factory default assumes. A pellet stove set up to sea-level trim runs rich, sooties its glass and underperforms. Adjusting air or feed trim is a few minutes' work and transforms how the appliance behaves - and it is almost never done, because nobody mentions it at the point of sale.
