About Ponderosa Chimney

Small operation, three services, the White Mountains only.

We sweep and inspect chimneys, repair and waterproof crowns, and service wood and pellet stoves across Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside and Snowflake. That is the whole list. We are not a masonry contractor and we do not sell stoves or fireplaces, which means nothing we recommend is pointed at a second invoice.

The name is the tree. The White Mountains sit in the largest continuous stand of ponderosa pine in the world, and just about everything on this website - the firewood, the needles in your flue, the shade keeping your chimney damp - comes back to it one way or another.

How pricing works

You get a firm number before work starts and that is the number on the invoice. If we open something up and find a genuine surprise, we stop and photograph it, and you decide. Nothing gets added that you have not looked at first - and if you are three hours away in the Valley, that means it gets emailed to you before we carry on.

Absentee owners get photographs, not descriptions

A large share of the property we work on belongs to people who are not there. Being asked to authorise work on a roof you cannot see, on the word of somebody you have not met, is exactly the position this trade has historically exploited. So the deliverable is dated before-and-after photographs and a plain written note, emailed, every time.

Snowflake and Taylor are route days

We batch the outlying towns onto scheduled days rather than driving twenty-five miles for one job. That is what lets us charge the same rate everywhere instead of adding travel. The trade-off is worth stating: we are not the right call for a same-day emergency down there.

What we will talk you out of

  • Sweeping a flue that is not due this year
  • A control board when the real fault is a caked exhaust blower
  • A new stove when the old one needs a gasket and a baffle
  • Any crown or sealing work booked in the wrong season to cure properly

Straight answers

If the flue is clean we say so. If the stove is worth keeping, we say that too - we do not sell appliances.

Why the Chimney Trade Has the Reputation It Has

It is worth being direct, because you have probably met it. Chimney work is sold to people who cannot see the product. You cannot inspect your own flue, you have no way to verify what was removed, and the failure being sold against - a house fire - is frightening enough that fear does most of the selling. That combination attracts a certain kind of operator.

The tells are consistent. A firm price on the phone far below anyone else's. Before-and-after photographs that are not of your chimney. A repair that appears only once the technician is already on the roof. An urgent finding with no documentation attached. And, in cabin country specifically, work billed to an owner three hours away who has no way to check that it happened.

Our answer is documentation. Photographs of your flue, handed over whether or not you buy anything, and a written finding you can take to somebody else for a second opinion. If we are wrong about something that makes it easy to catch - which is rather the point.
